Does my newsletter need one-click unsubscribe?

Short answerYes, if you send marketing or newsletters to inboxes at Gmail or Yahoo. Both require one-click unsubscribe and, in addition, a clearly visible unsubscribe link in the text12.

What Gmail requires

Marketing messages and subscribed messages must support one-click unsubscribe and contain a clearly visible unsubscribe link in the text1.

Anyone who already had an unsubscribe link was given until 1 June 2024 to switch over3.

What Yahoo requires

Yahoo requires a working List-Unsubscribe header that supports one-click unsubscribe2.

The unsubscribe must take effect within two days; otherwise the requirement is deemed not to have been met4.

Which emails does this apply to?

Only to marketing. Yahoo explicitly states that one-click unsubscribe is required only for promotional messages4. Invoices and order confirmations are not covered.

What else is involved

Unsubscribing alone is not enough. Gmail also requires all senders to have SPF or DKIM1.
