Measured 19 October 2026 · 1,521 company websites

Half of UK company websites don't tell search engines and AI who the company is

Organization structured data is a short, machine-readable note in a website's code: company name, address, logo, contact details. Google says adding it to the home page can help it better understand an organisation and tell it apart in search results. We read the home pages of 1,521 UK company websites. 784 of the 1,520 we could measure, 51.6%, have no such note.

Three numbers

  • 51.6%

    have no Organization structured data

784 of 1,520 home pages carry no Organization or LocalBusiness markup. Nothing in the code says which company stands behind the website.
  • 24.4%

    have no meta description

371 of 1,521 home pages give no short description of themselves. Search engines then pick a snippet on their own.
  • 11.0%

show almost no text without scripts

167 of 1,521 home pages show fewer than 150 words before any script runs. That is what a reader sees that does not run scripts.

The three basics together

Only 40.8% of the home pages get all three right: Organization structured data, a meta description and readable text without scripts. The other 59.2% miss at least one of them. Each one takes a few lines in the page code.

How we measured

The starting point is a list of 2,000 UK companies with a website, sorted alphabetically. Legal form was matched by name against Companies House. 1,521 home pages answered on 19 October 2026; only these count. Almost all are private limited companies (1,486); LLPs and plcs are too few for a separate figure.

We read each home page once, without running scripts. Organization structured data counts as present when the page carries JSON-LD of the type Organization or LocalBusiness, including their subtypes. Google describes this markup here: Organization structured data.

We name no business and publish no individual result.
